Retro Chic Cloche

You can make an ab-fab cloche from an ordinary brimmed hat.

Step 1

Start with a brimmed hat of felt or straw—felt is nice because it doesn’t fray and is easier to manipulate. Remove all ribbons and trimmings.

step 1

Step 2

Cut the brim of the hat away from the crown so that you have two separate pieces. Cut through the brim on one side (If the brim has hat wire in it use wire cutters to snip the wire, otherwise you’ll damage your scissors.) Trim the hemmed edge of the brim to leave a flat unhemmed edge.

Step 3

Cut the brim to create a curved piece with two ends. Edge the brim section on all four sides with ribbon or trim of your choice. Affix with hot glue or sew it on. Don’t be too concerned about imperfections in the lay of the ribbon, it can give a nice shabby chic appearance if your trim is not perfect. Sewing the ribbon will give it a clean, finished look.

Supplies

  • scissors (wire cutters if the hat has wire in the brim)
  • trims and decorations of your choice
  • hot glue gun and/or sewing machine

Step 4

Sew or hot glue your trim on to the bottom of the crown (you can also leave that edge plain if it is wool, and you desire a simpler design). Straw hats will need some type of edging or hemming to prevent fraying.

step 4

Step 5

Now it’s time for the fun part, trimming your hat. Belle chose to tack a matching ostrich feather to the crown, and put a vintage brooch in the front on the brim. She also recommends flowers or bows, noting you can go in most any creative direction.
