Clay pendants are simple to create and style to your own taste with a variety of symbols and images.
Artist Kari Hansen used polymer clay, a rubber stamp and cardstock to create this stunning pendant.
The rubber stamp was used as a mask, or template, for the clay piece. You could also use clip art or a computer font with this technique.
Whatever character you decide on, don't forget that you can scan and enlarge or reduce the printed image to make any size pendant.
Step 1
Condition the black polymer clay. Roll through a pasta machine on the thickest setting or use a rolling pin to create a clay sheet. Place the clay sheet on wax paper or other nonstick surface, such as a ceramic tile.
Step 2
To create a character “mask,” stamp your design on cardstock and cut out. Remember, you can also use a computer font or clip art to print a character on cardstock.
Step 3
Place the cardstock mask on the sheet of black clay. Use a craft knife to cut the clay, following the outline of the mask. Remove any excess clay and smooth the edges of the clay character.
Step 4
Condition the red polymer clay just as you did the black clay in step 1. Place the clay sheet on wax paper or another nonstick surface, such as a ceramic tile. Cut out a circle (or whatever shape you would like) using a cookie cutter, clay cutter or template.
Step 5
Carefully peel the black clay character from the wax paper and place onto the red clay pendant. Create a small hole in the top of pendant with a needle tool or small clay cutter.
Step 6
With the pendant still on the wax paper or ceramic tile, transfer the clay to a baking sheet. Heat in the oven according to the clay manufacturer’s directions.
