Feather pins

Juliette Mourez of Mezzo shares the secret of making her fabulous feather pins.

Supplies

• bobby pins
• clear-drying craft glue
• a thin stick (brochette style)
• loose feathers
• elastic thread (Juliette recommends brown or white Opelon floss)
• scissors

Step 1

Clean up the base of the feather by removing the “hair” on the first 1/4". Slide the pin on your left middle finger. Dab a drop of glue on the surface of the pin (the “waffled” side). Use just enough to wet the metal and keep the feather in place while you’re working.

Step 2

Cut a 6" piece of thread, pass it through the pin and make a simple knot that you will not yet tighten. Using your thumbnail, hold the feather base in place on the glue while you slide the knot over and tighten it with your free fingers. Double the knot for safety.

Step 3

Twist the thread around the pin and feather 6 to 10 times, making sure the entire base is covered. Pull the stretchy thread tight while doing this. Careful not to wrap around the whole pin or it won’t open anymore.

Step 4

Tie up the loose end of the thread with a double knot. Cut off extra thread close to the knot. Let the glue dry and solidify before sliding it into your hair. Instant exoticism.
